medium--a way or means that is used to convey other things

employed--used, put into use

archaic--something that is old or is no longer in use

coined--made, created

illustrious--something that is respected

inherent--expected, given, generally understood

phonetically--the sounds of the words

astutely--intelligently

authoritative--knowledgeable

former--first, previous

merits--virtues, praises, good deeds
