Intransitive Verbs

These verbs do not need any direct object. Therefore,it looks like this:

                                               subject / verb

    examples: It rains.
                      Money talks.
                      She eats.

These examples show that no direct objects are needed in order to understand the meaning of the sentence, contrary to transitive verbs. Specifically, we do not necessary need to know what she eats.

Attention!!! In the sentence "she sings well," well is not a direct object. It is an adverb that
modifies the verb. Thus, the verb "to sing" in this example is intransitive.
More examples of common mistakes:

    1. They all danced beautifully.
Here, "to dance" is intransitive because "beautifully" is not a direct object. It is an adverb that modifies the verb.

    2. They left to the movie.
Here, "to leave" is intransitive because "to the movie" is not a direct object, it only modifies the verb.
