WELCOME
TO
WEB SITE WORKSHOP V!

Our goal today is to create more internal links and add some design features to the pages.

Based on Workshop IV, we have seen how tastes in web pages vary; some of us may like pages with lots of sound and images, while some of us may like simple texts.

In this workshop, we will expand our tool kit to allow us to be more creative on our pages, if we so choose.

Although Netscape Composer is limited in its capability of producing original art and sound, it is quite capable of allowing us to use the images and sound clips that others have created.  Again, it is important to consider some of the copyright concerns discussed in Workshop II.  Always give credit when borrowing, or better yet, borrow only from sites that are designed for public use.

For example, the best "store" for images is Iconbazaar at http://www.iconbazaar.com.  Browse this site to see what it offers.  In particular, read the Conditions for Use.  As an educational institution, we are allowed 20 images without special permission.  Also, it is good practice to give credit to Iconbazaar in a statement such as the following:

Images and Backgrounds from Iconbazaar at http://www.iconbazaar.com.

(You may copy and paste the above statement into your pages.)

Keep in mind that images often take long to load, so use them wisely.

Exercise 1:
Go to Iconbazaar.  Find the below image (under Animated Arrows).  Follow the directions from Iconbazaar : Right click, select Save Image as,  and then save it to your disk (Floppy A).  Note the name of the file (this one is 1ar01a).  Click on Image, then Choose File, Look In Floppy A, and find the file for 1ar01a.  Click Open and Apply. Insert the following image  onto this page:

Exercise 2:
Whenever you find an image you like, you can save it on this disk by going to File and Save As.  For example, the above image (of the rotating red arrow) is saved on this disk.  Click on Image above, and insert the image file  named 1ar02a (saved on this disk):

Note that you can also change the size of the image by right clicking on the image, clicking on Image Properties, and changing the dimensions.  You may also move the image by using Cut and Paste.

Exercise 3:
Beside images, you may also choose a different background for your page.  In Iconbazaar, go to Backgrounds.  Browse the options and select a background that you would like for your personal web page or favorite site page.  Save the background to your disk by right clicking and selecting Save as. Note the name of the file. Open your personal web page or favorite site page.  Go to Format.  Select Page Colors and Properties.  Find Background Image.  Choose file and look on drive A.  Select the file for the background.  Open it and click OK or Apply.  (The background for this page is saved on this disk and is cdbk001a.  I don't recommend it.  Too busy for my tastes.)

Project for the afternoon:

Browse Iconbazaar for images, backgrounds, and/ or animations that are relevant to any of the pages you've created so far.  Following the directions, add them to your pages.  Remember the rules from Workshop IV.

Project for the next workshop:

Continue to work on the web pages for your assigned topics.  If you have questions, I can be reached by email at hkrauthamer@hotmail.com.
